Escape, 2021

Acrylic on canvas, Acrylic on wall, 185 x 90 cm

Inspired by ‘escapism’, a term defined as being “ a retreat from the problems, routines, and tensions of everyday reality by seeking distraction or relaxation in entertainment or fantasy” in the Oxford dictionary of Media and Communications, this piece manifests the idea that creating art can be an escape from reality, a moment in time where for just the time you are painting, drawing and creating, your mind is focused on the activity rather than any else. This idea is based on how art therapy is used by health services as a form of Psychotherapy as coping mechanisms.

This piece encapsulates what it feels like to feel an escape with art, the blue of the figure hinting to a darker possibly sad feeling but with the colour coming out of them representing art and all things creative, they are almost transported to a new reality away from what was making them feel this way.
